Travis Kelce Reacts to Breaking Tony Gonzalez’s Touchdown Record

Travis Kelce scored a touchdown during his game on Wednesday, December 25, breaking the Kansas City Chiefs’ rushing record.

Kelce’s touchdown on Wednesday meant the 35-year-old athlete hit Tony GonzalezPreviously held record for most career receptions. In celebration, Kelce shot the ball in honor of Gonzalez himself.

“I’ve been following him since he was a rookie and it doesn’t surprise me,” Gonzalez, 48, said during a November broadcast. NFL on Prime Video. “He is one of the strongest players ever. … If he stops it, I will pay that fine!”

It is against NFL rules to throw the ball into the goal, often resulting in a hefty fine for unsportsmanlike conduct. The league has yet to confirm further details about the potential fine.

Kelce’s touchdown made the Chiefs beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 29-10. He and his colleagues Patrick Mahomes named the official game MVPs, they received Santa-inspired puffer costumes and a red velvet cake in the shape of a football.

In a postgame interview, Kelce opened up about his record-breaking streak.

“It’s everything to me. Tony has been a mentor to me, he has always been there for me [with] any questions I ever had,” Kelce said. “I feel like I’m still trying to fill that boy’s shoes.”

He added, “He’s an unbelievable competitor and I have a lot of love for him. It is an honor to talk to him.”

Quarterback Mahomes, 29, also welcomed Kelce’s performance.

“We found a lot of weapons there. We get healthy at the right time,” Mahomes said. “The big guy leads us all, but we have guys everywhere. I try to stay as long as possible.”

“I thought it was a full team game. The defense stepped up, the offense stepped up [and] everyone has an impact on the game,” Mahomes joked. “I told my pregnant wife [Brittany Mahomes] I would get the No. 1 seed. 1, to have a child.”

Patrick and Brittany, 29, are currently expecting their third child. In a pregame interview Wednesday, Patrick told the sportscaster Kay Adams that his wife will arrive “any day now.”

Brittany, for her part, didn’t go to Pittsburgh on game day and instead watched the NFL game at home in KC with children Sterling, 3, and Bronze, 21.

“Baking and watching Daddy,” Brittany wrote on her Instagram Story on Wednesday afternoon.
