The final selection of the Biden Medal of Freedom shows the Dems are ‘not available,’ says the writer

A Politico columnist criticized President Biden for his final selection of Medal of Freedom recipients, including liberal figures like Hillary Clinton and billionaire George Soros.

Politico’s editor-in-chief, Michael Schaffer, wrote that Biden’s choice of awards sends a strong signal that Democrats are “no longer working” and said that honors, having gone beyond politics, are now another political arena.

“The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the nation’s highest honor and is awarded to individuals who have made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values or security of the United States, world peace or other important public, public or private endeavors,” The White House said the statement.

Schaffer wrote that Biden’s choice, announced on Jan. 4, actually featured a group of winners who failed to defeat President-elect Trump during the campaign.

“For all their cultural and humanitarian accomplishments, Wintour and Andrés aren’t exactly selling products that ordinary Americans can find,” Schaffer wrote. “Romney and Cheney family Republicanism lost the election because it was unpopular. (This year, Cheney’s endorsement did not help the Democratic candidate.).”

Former Sen. Mitt Romney posthumously accepted the award on behalf of his late father, George Romney, the three-term Republican governor of Michigan.

“For some Republicans — who reacted strongly against the inclusion of George Soros, a purveyor of liberal causes and the target of a long-time conservative-smear campaign — it sounds sad,” Schaffer wrote.

“Worse, politics is unlikely to help Biden’s party or his legacy,” the columnist added.

He said that without Biden rising above the political fray in Washington, DC, “honorables also feel like a last-minute political fray of the incoming administration.”

“It feels hard to fool the outgoing president by celebrating his favorites as the curtain comes down — especially since, this time, the winners are removing the hurdle of spending years in their fields,” Schaffer wrote. “Yet the political upheaval marks the demotion of the nation’s highest honor, meant to celebrate America’s greatest contributions.”

Political commentators and opponents of Biden used the event to attack the president, with billionaire Elon Musk emerging as one of the most prominent voices criticizing megadonor George Soros in particular.

“It’s a shame that Biden is giving Soros the Medal of Freedom,” Musk posted on X last week in response to news that the nation’s highest honor will be presented to Soros, whose vast financial empire has funded progressive politicians’ campaigns, laws, voting systems and programs.

Fox News’ Michael Dorgon and Andrew Mark Miller contributed to this report.
