Two people were killed and 18 others injured after a small plane crashed into a commercial building in southern California, officials said.
Ten people were taken to the hospital with injuries, the Fullerton Police Department said in the X post Thursday afternoon. Eight others were treated for injuries and released at the scene.
The single-engine RV-10 crashed at 14:15PST (20:15GMT), according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
Officials have not released any other details about how the crash happened. It is not clear whether the two dead were crew members or aboard the plane.
The police said they evacuated the buildings in the area, and asked the public to stay away from the accident site.
Congressman Lou Correa, who represents the area of Orange County, which is 40 kilometers south of Los Angeles, said that the building that was hit was a furniture manufacturing business.
In a post on X, Correa said at least a dozen of the victims were factory workers.
Aerial footage of the incident shows parts of the plane inside the building. The accident also sparked a fire that was extinguished by the fire department.
Security footage from a building across the street shows the fire, according to local media.
“People are freaking out about this situation,” said witness Mark Anderson KRCA-TV.
“It was just a big bomb, and then one of the people came out and said, ‘Oh my God, the building is on fire.’
The crash site is near the Fullerton Municipal Airport, about 6 miles (10 kilometers) from Disneyland.
The plane was seen returning to the airport shortly after takeoff, according to KRCA-TV.
About 100 people were eventually evacuated from the Michael Nicholas Designs furniture factory, according to the report Orange County Register newspaper.
Juanita Ramirez, a worker, told the newspaper that she heard a loud noise before seeing a large ball of fire flying towards her.
“It felt like a dream,” she said.
This is the second plane to crash in the area in the past two months, according to CBS, the US-affiliated BBC.
