For the past few months, I’ve been working on reporting on the current state of Google search results, with the goal of helping Independent Publishers better understand what’s going on. Last month, Valnet (a large media company that owns sites like Screen Rant, Game Rant, Collider, Comic Book Resources, Gamer, Open Critic, Dual Shockers, and many others) started issuing legal threats demanding that I remove my previous reporting. their company and its position in Google search results.
Valnet’s first letter asking me to be silent can be read in full here.
I responded to those threats by informing them that I would not do that. You can read my full response here.
Because of my refusal to surrender my constitutionally protected First Amendment rights, Valnet’s legal counsel informed me that “caution” all my “articles, social media posts and other public works.” What exactly those “public works” are is not specified in their communication.

If I want Valent to stop “surveilling” me, I will have to remove the referrals I made to their company and avoid doing them again in the future.
Below are two examples of X posts I made that Valnet wants removed. Many other examples can be found in their full links, including this article.
