Immigration activists in New York City on Thursday criticized Mayor Eric Adam’s meeting with Trump’s incoming border chief Tom Homan, accusing him of “collusion” with the new administration.

“It is unfortunate that Mayor Adams continues to shirk his responsibilities to support New York City’s existing policies and values as a sanctuary city by working with Trump’s border kingpin Tom Homan,” said Murad Awawdeh, President and CEO of the New York Immigration Coalition, in a statement. statement.

Adams will meet with Homan on Thursday afternoon. Adams said he wants to sit down with Homan and talk about working together to prosecute especially violent criminals. Homan has repeatedly said that threats to public safety will be at the forefront of the expected mass deportation campaign.

“I will not fight with these managers, I will cooperate with these managers,” Adams said last week. “President Trump is the president-elect. And whoever he chooses to run his agencies. I look forward to sitting down and seeing how we can make New York better.”

“I like to talk to our border governor and find out what his plans are. When we have common reasons, we can work together. And I firmly believe, my history is sitting with those on the other side of the road who have different ways of thinking and sit down and express my ideas,” he said. “I believe I have ideas I can deal with this issue, and we can achieve what the American people have been telling us: Secure our borders, talk to people who commit acts of violence in our country and make sure that … they will be safe.”

But he also clarified that otherwise law-abiding immigrants “must not be rounded up at midnight.”

Adams also had a message for critics from the left, telling them to “cancel me.”

“Well, withdraw, because I’m going to protect the people of this city, and if you come to this country, to this city, and you think you’re going to hurt innocent New Yorkers and innocent immigrants and asylum seekers, this is not a mayor you want to be in the city under,” he said.

But that didn’t stop activist groups from criticizing the meeting.

“New Yorkers know that under Homan ICE will be used to segregate us, brutally target and demonize immigrants, while making every New Yorker even more insecure, Awawdeh said. “Many of us remember the gunfire and street brawls that occurred as a result. for ICE actions at a Brooklyn settlement, in 2020, that resulted in an immigrant New Yorker being shot in the face. “

“Directing immigrants for detention and deportation is damaging and diverts resources from programs that promote safety and well-being. Mayor Adams has a responsibility to all New York families to preserve our public safety by refusing to participate in ICE’s brutal and politicized immigration program. .”

“Study after study shows that cities with more immigrants are safer than those with fewer immigrants, and areas with sanctuary policies have lower crime rates. Adams is putting his political interests ahead of the needs and public safety of all New Yorkers,” he said. Awawdeh.

Meanwhile, Homan said last week he was open to a meeting with Adams.

“I’m willing to meet with him, and I’m willing to meet with anyone to help make their communities safer,” Homan said on “America’s Newsroom” after being contacted by Adams’ management.

“Prioritizing outside the gate are threats to public safety; work with us on that. It makes your community safer. It keeps my police officers safe. It keeps the community safe. Let’s work together to do this.”
