CNN took down a banner on a shirtless photo of Luigi Mangione during an interview about his social media obsession
CNN anchor Kasie Hunt said during her show Tuesday that the store needs to “drop the banner” to see why social media users were drawn to UnitedHealthcare CEO Luigi Mangione.
“The man accused of killing the CEO of UnitedHealthCare is going viral. The photos of Luigi Mangione seem to be attracting a lot of attention on the Internet. The Manhattan killings also reveal a deep dissatisfaction with the health care industry in the United States,” said Hunt, beginning the segment.
Mangione, a 26-year-old Ivy League graduate and software engineer, has made a name for himself on the Internet since his arrest in connection with the slaying of UnitedHealthcare executive Brian Thompson.
“It’s very troubling that we’re celebrating this brutal killer because, you know, he went to the gym,” said Kate Bedingfield, a CNN political analyst.
ARRESTED IN PENNSYLVANIA MCDONALD’S UNITEDHEALTHCARE CEO.
“You know, we have to take down the banner to show why,” Hunt said, as the banner covering part of Mangione’s image disappeared.
Bedingfield also suggested that Mangione’s supporters spoke of the shallowness of the American people.
“The reaction on the Internet is also such a reinforcement of how much beauty, attractiveness, even shallowness of the American people. The American people on the Internet we will say, it is very much shown here. Part, yes, there is a lot of anger about the inequality in the country and the health care system because this is an attractive person, ” said Bedingfield.

Reacting to Mangione’s photos online, many social media users quoted Britney Spears’ song “Criminal,” specifically the lyrics, “mommy I’m dating a criminal.”
Some say he is “hot,” and they say he should relax. Another user said, “someone who is interested in more ways than one.”

Taylor Tomlinson, a late-night host and comedian, also joked about Mangione’s fans during his show, “After Midnight.”
“All the other late-night shows already show that everyone thinks the shooter is hot,” he said. “But I feel confident that I am the only late-night host who can honestly say: ‘I can.’
“It turns out that he was indeed caught because the employee knew him and called the police,” he continued. “Do you know how attractive you are for a McDonald’s employee to be like, ‘Wait, okay, your being here is suspicious.’
Tomlinson added that she was surprised who gave her away because everyone online was calling her “lovely.”
