Eli Manning explains why Giants wouldn’t let him take the subway: ‘It was my contract’
Eli Manning Giants fans were surprised last week when he revealed that he had just taken his first subway ride, despite spending all 16 years of the NFL playing in New York.
Monday night, giants the elder had a good reason why he did not choose that form of transport.
During Monday night’s broadcast of the “ManningCast,” Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning began mocking his brother for not daring to take subways despite his New York career.

“Eli, this scared me a lot, I thought he was a people person,” he laughed. “You’ve been there since 2004. This is your first time riding the Subway? You’re disappointed.”
Eli first pointed out the obvious that, despite the name, the Giants play at MetLife Stadium New Jersey.
“I’m a man of the people. I live in New Jersey. I’m not in the city very often. I was in the city last week. I had to go from uptown to the city – jump on the subway.’ I’m a people person.”

He also pointed out that it was a business decision.
“It was my contract when I was playing, I wasn’t allowed to ride the subway. I couldn’t be pushed in front of a train.”
The NFL contract expressly prohibits players from participating in activities outside of football that may pose a risk of injury. According to the ESPN report as of June, those activities range from high-risk activities, such as rock climbing and skiing, to other sports, such as playing basketball.

In 2023, former Buffalo Bills running back Nyheim Hines was injured during the season. Freak jet ski accident. He missed the entire season after tearing his left ACL and MCL, and the Bills were out of contract. According to EPN, they finally reached an agreement, and he was released in March.
