America’s favorite and least favorite Thanksgiving dishes: a report
Come November, there are many hot-button discussions about Thanksgiving meals.
Are mashed potatoes better than sweet potato casserole?
Are Brussels sprouts the best or worst dish? Is pumpkin pie or apple pie a better choice for dessert? The list goes on.

While these debates may not be settled, Instacart, an online grocery delivery and pickup platform, attempted to settle the debate about Americans’ favorite and least favorite Thanksgiving meals in a new report.
Based on an online survey of more than 2,000 Americans conducted by Harris Poll on behalf of Instacart in September 2024, turkey, mashed potatoes and stuffing are among the favorite Thanksgiving dishes of Americans.

As for the most popular Thanksgiving dishes in the US, cranberry sauce, green bean casserole and roasted autumn vegetables are among the top contenders.

In terms of what Americans were loading into their grocery carts in preparation for Turkey Day, Instacart compared the share of items purchased for each category during the seven-day period from Nov. 17, 2023 to Nov. 23, 2023 and the share of purchases throughout the year, and determined the categories with the highest difference.

The top item? A whole turkey.
This Thanksgiving staple saw a 5,096% year-over-year increase based on Instacart shopping data, followed closely by cranberries (a 3,777% increase) and frozen turkey (a 3,619% increase).
Rounding out the top five are two delicious ones; pumpkin pie and canned cranberries.
