49ers’ Fred Warner continues to compete, makes no excuses for broken ankle: ‘That’s the NFL’

The defending NFC champion San Francisco 49ers have had more than their fair share of injuries this season.

Quarterback Brock Purdy missed the Niners’ Week 12 game against the Green Bay Packers with a shoulder strain. Brandon Aiyuk appeared in just seven games before an ACL injury forced San Francisco to place the wide receiver on the injured list. Christian McCaffrey missed several games early in the season. Pass rusher Nick Bosa and wide receiver Deebo Samuel also missed time with injuries in 2024.

Fred Warner is one of the key players who has been able to stay busy in every game for the Niners so far this year. However, the availability of the three-time All-Pro linebacker this season did not come without some challenges. On Wednesday, Warner revealed that he has been dealing with a nagging ankle injury since late September.

“It’s something I deal with every game,” Warner said. “I get on that table before every game and get it fired up every single game so I can wrap up. But it’s not an excuse. It’s just what it is. That’s the NFL. You’re not going to survive. You. You’ve got to go out there, you’ve got to find ways to do it, play at a high level and win.” every week.”

Warner has been on the roster for only a handful of participants at one time since injuring his ankle. Although injuries may have hindered Warner at times this season, he continues to have a productive season. The star linebacker has 84 tackles and two interceptions on the season.

Warner suggested that he would be willing to play through the pain this year and admitted that the injury is unlikely to heal as he continues to play through it.

“Anytime you break a bone, if you keep playing on it, the bone usually won’t be able to heal itself,” Warner said. “So, you just have to keep fighting.”
