Google is testing a new format for hotel searches in Europe to comply with EU law
Google has begun short tests in Germany, Belgium and Estonia that simplify search results for hotels and accommodations by removing certain details.
The test will see the release of various hotel features such as the map, hotel results below the map, property information and other hotel data.
Users will be allowed to see links to individual websites, including hotel and vacation rental websites and comparison sites.
This change, returning to the basic blue link format, responds to the European Union’s demands for greater compliance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
Google’s parent company Alphabet has faced scrutiny since March over allegations that its new search features run afoul of the DMA’s ban on self-selection.
In the past year, Google has partnered with the European Commission and industries, including hotels, airlines, and small shops.
The tech giant reports a 30% drop in traffic in these sectors due to DMA alignment efforts.
Meanwhile, comparison sites, which include various options for users, represent more changes.
Google is proposing three more changes to its search function.
The main update involves expanded options and similar formats, allowing users to choose comparison sites or specific supplier websites when searching for products, hotels, flights, and restaurants.
Additionally, comparison sites will benefit from a new format that displays additional information such as images and prices within Google search results.
Finally, Google plans to introduce new advertising units for comparison sites, although no concrete examples have been provided.
The hotel search test is temporary, but Google has expressed skepticism, citing potential negative impacts on both the company and European businesses.
The search giant is looking for a balanced solution that satisfies DMA, European consumers and businesses, and its operating model.
