Michelle Williams wants Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland to perform on Broadway
As Michelle Williams takes the stage for her next Broadway role, wishes her former Destiny’s Child girl group members — Beyoncé again Kelly Rowland – would be, too.
“I would actually like them,” Williams, 45, said to himself Us Weekly on the purple carpet at the opening night of the Death Be Him. “I think they can play in a Broadway show – definitely!”
While Beyoncé and Rowland haven’t announced their theater dates yet, a Destiny’s Child reunion took place earlier this month when the two — along with Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Knowles – attended Williams’ premiere to support their longtime friend.
Death Be Him, it turns out that it has caused many encounters. Williams, and Paul Tazewell – the show’s costume designer – teamed up after working together on the first national tour of The Color Purple in 2007. Their shared history freed Williams (Tazewell is known for his work on Broadway’s Hamilton, which won him a Tony Award for Best Costume Design for a Musical, this year They are not bad movie.)
“When I saw that his name was actually part of that design team, I didn’t say anything,” he said Us. “I knew I would be in good hands.”
In the first act of Death Be Him – based on the 1992 movie of the same name – Williams stands center stage in a glittering purple ensemble designed by Tazewell himself. Some of those extravagant outfits reminded Williams of her girl group days.
“Especially with all the beads and other jewelry. I know in some of the installations, I was reminded of all those corset soaking times,” Williams continued. “I love that about theater, the dressing we can do depending on the type of play. And this show, beautiful, beautiful designs.”
In Death Be Him, Williams plays Viola Van Horn, a woman who administers a youth potion to Madeline Ashton (Megan Hilty) and Helen Sharp (Jennifer Simard). Williams won the role Isabella Rossellini in the film and found his own way of keeping it fresh, speaking We, “All I can do is bring it to me, you know?”
As a fan of Destiny’s Child, Williams’ costar Christopher Sieberwho plays the role of Ernest – started by Bruce Willis on screen – he was in awe of working with such a musical legend. “When they said Michelle was going to join us, I was like, ‘Are you kidding me?'” Sieber said. Us. “And all my gay friends were like, ‘What? Michelle Williams?’ I said, ‘Yes!'”
Julia Mattisonon the other hand – who composed the music and lyrics for the show – was “in heaven” working with Williams, and used Williams’ decades-long career to his advantage.
“My Harmony brain was very wired because of Destiny’s Child,” Matison said Us. “His voice is very much rooted in the same age that I became passionate about theater and Broadway. So, to step up and have him be a part of it is pretty amazing.”
Death Be Him now playing at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre.
