JonBenet Ramsey’s Murder Case Condemns Police: Source
Boulder PD has been feeling “a lot of pressure” to solve it JonBenét Ramseykilling ‘s.
Before Netflix Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey was first shown on Monday, November 25, a source connected to authorities in Boulder, Colorado, told exclusively Us Weekly about the 28-year investigation into Ramsey’s death.
“It’s a shame that we haven’t been able to resolve this yet, too [Police Chief Stephen] Redfearn he wants this to be resolved,” said an insider involved in the case. “He wants that feather in his cap. He wants to remove this stigma that we are corrupt or incompetent, and solving this case would be the best way to show it publicly.”
There were “new eyes” on the case in an effort to find “anything that was overlooked.”
“No one is off the table. This case is still open,” the source continued. “We follow the truth, whatever it is. We will not leave anything behind. The kindest thing we can do for the Ramseys is to resolve this.”
JonBenét died at the age of 6 in 1996 after his parents, Patsy again John Ramsey, he received a ransom note demanding money for his return. A few hours later, JonBenét’s body was found under their house and a series of missteps by the authorities led to the crime scene and no proper leads.
Patsy and John were initially accused of involvement, with a grand jury voting to indict the pair in 1999. The case was not signed by the Boulder district attorney, however, due to a lack of evidence. Both parents were exonerated in 2008 when DNA testing helped investigators determine that the DNA found on JonBenét’s body came from an unrelated man.
“DNA may be the key, or maybe something else. This case can be solved,” said a police source Us. “Someone knows something, we want to find him. We will not leave anything behind. Someone is looking at this case every day, and we will solve it.”
John, who participated in Netflix The Cold Caseurged authorities to review the evidence, saying, “We know that there are five or six items taken from the crime scene.” They were sent to a lab for DNA samples and they were not taken. We want those things to be sampled. We want what has already been sampled to be re-examined.”
He continued: “Then use public genealogy information to look for – not just a match – but a common relative. That has been used successfully in the past few years by police departments to find killers in old cold cases.”
In the months after JonBenét’s murder, Steve Thomas was the lead investigator in the case. He resigned from the Boulder PD in 1998 and later Thomas Trujillo take the investigation. Trujillo resigned from the case in 2022 and was the Chief of Police at the time Maris Herold appointed the team before he resigned earlier this year and Redfearn took over his job.
As JonBenét’s case has been turned over to various DA successors and Boulder PD detectives, his family has questioned the lack of answers. A Boulder PD spokesperson said Us in a statement issued earlier this month that they are “investigating the case diligently and following all procedures.”
