Patrick Reed shot 59 on the preferred lie on the Asian Tour
HONG KONG — Patrick Reed became the ninth player this year to shoot 59 or less, closing with four straight birdies for an 11-under round Saturday to take the lead at the Hong Kong Open on the Asian Tour.
The result will not be recognized as a record on the Asian Tour due to the preferred lie, where players can lift, clean and place golf balls on short grass.
John Catlin also had a 59 on the Asian Tour this year in Macau, another International Series tournament on the Asian Tour, which is still a record.
Reed opened with five straight birdies and finished with four straight birdies. He was three strokes ahead of India’s Rashid Khan and Thailand’s Nitithorn Thippong.
Other rounds under 60 this year were on the PGA Tour, three on the Korn Ferry Tour and one each on the LIV Golf League and PGA Tour Americas. Cristobal Del Solar shot a 57 on the Korn Ferry Tour for the lowest round of the year and tied for the lowest on the professional tour.
