What you need to know about Pinehurst No. 10
Give a talented builder a sandy, rolling surface and set few limits on him, and it’s amazing what can be produced. Donald Ross did so with prosperity in this resort, and this time, it was Tom Doak’s turn – and he got a bonus for not having to pay where the homes could go or come back. The result is a walking tour that delights in its movement. The first eight holes include three par-4s – a drivable fourth, a burly dogleg-right 6th and a medium-length 8th that plays into old mine spoils – highlighting the diversity of the area. Meanwhile, running from a devastating 468-yard 9 to a 264-yard 14 is one of Doak’s strongest moves. Natural wetlands are found in two of the last four holes. These various obstacles ultimately make No. 10 is a secret among the offerings of this resort.
What our viewers say
“Pinehurst No. 10 highlights the best aspects of what a sand-based design should be – thoughtful play and superimposed power. The back-to-back sloping green on the opening hole prepares you for something different. The third drive attracts bold gameplay and often silly moments. The 8th fairway looks like an ocean in the middle of a storm with bold yet rewarding features to attack the mound to the right. The back nine is loaded with half holes where well taken and executed shots will be well rewarded. The design from tee to green is the perfect balance to the design of Pinehurst No. 2.”
“No. 10 is in a very special place and Tom Doak is a master of nature, intelligence and restraint. The par-3 2nd hole is perhaps the single most attractive and memorable shooter in the entire Pinehurst collection. Great variety in length and movement of the holes. The structures on the green get and keep your attention and there is even a rare green at the start of the par-5 after the turn that makes you talk to yourself (in a good way!). A tough but refreshing ride.”
