A Texas doctor who poisoned patients with contaminated medical bags has been sentenced to 190 years

A Texas anesthesiologist convicted of injecting heart-stopping poison into patients’ IV bags has been sentenced to 190 years in prison.

Raynaldo Riviera Ortiz, Jr., 60, who was once called a “health terrorist,” was found guilty of four counts of tampering with consumer products resulting in serious bodily injury, one count of tampering with a consumer product and five counts of intentional adultery. drugs after an eight-day trial in April last year.

During the trial, doctors said they were confused when their patients’ blood pressure suddenly increased, according to a news release from the US Attorney’s Office, Northern District of Texas. After reviewing the medical records, one thing that is common in each case is that these emergencies occurred after the new IV bags were hung.

Evidence presented in the trial showed that Surgicare North Dallas patients experienced cardiac emergencies during routine medical procedures in 2022. The evidence shows that it was not done by any particular doctor.

After these unexplained emergencies, one anesthetist treated himself for dehydration using one of the dirty bags and died that day. Her husband, Dr. John Kaspar, told the court that the memory of seeing his wife’s “dead eyes” still haunts him and he will not leave her. “She was my life” and “the strongest woman” he had ever met, he said.

During the sentencing, families and patients spoke of the “life-changing” pain they endured at Ortiz’s hands. Another victim’s son said that because of what happened, his 10-year-old son no longer trusts doctors because “the doctor tried to kill Pops.”

Another victim said that after the heart attack he woke up feeling “chewed” and since then it has not been the same.

Ortiz waived his rights and was not present to hear the sentencing or statements from his victims.
