California Senator-elect Adam Schiff defended his allegations of Russian collusion years ago during a recent appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
Host Jake Tapper asked Schiff on Sunday about President-elect Donald Trump’s latest controversial cabinet appointments, such as former presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz. Although Tapper called the nominees “disruptive,” he wondered if there was self-censorship in Washington encouraging them.
“He was accused in the House last year, in their opinion, of holding positions during the Trump presidency as chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, and, according to them, ‘abusing this trust that there is evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia,'” said Tapper. “And I wonder if do you feel at all, introspective at all, about that, according to the Mueller report and according to your Republican colleagues, exaggeration? And I wonder if you think that, in any way, you helped set the table. of those who disturb?”

“First of all, it wasn’t an exaggeration,” Schiff replied. “There is evidence of collusion. Trump’s campaign manager was meeting with Russian intelligence and giving them inside polling information, just to give you one example. And the Mueller report lays it all out.”
“It says, ‘The investigation did not reveal that members of the Trump campaign conspired or cooperated with the Russian government in their activities to interfere in the election,’ which does not mean that they did not do that, that there were no meetings, but they did not find evidence of it,” Tapper continued.

Schiff said, “Mueller says that, too. He says, ‘The fact that we didn’t find evidence beyond a reasonable doubt doesn’t mean there wasn’t evidence of conspiracy or collusion.’
In 2023, Schiff was criticized in a party vote by the House of Representatives over his repeated allegations that the 2016 Trump campaign colluded with Russia to win the presidential election. He was also removed from his position on the House Intelligence Committee earlier this year.
His claims stem from Steele’s infamous paper that claimed Trump’s team colluded with Russia and that the Kremlin had a confidential report on Trump. In 2019, Special Counsel Robert Mueller later concluded in his report that there was no evidence that Trump colluded with Russia.

The Steele dossier was dismissed again in 2021 after Special Counsel John Durham charged Russian analyst Ivan Danchenko, believed to be the mastermind of the dossier, with making false statements to the FBI.
