Agatha Everything Goes he continued to deliver one surprise after another until the final crowd-pleasing event. This included having Agatha and Rio lock lips, and although it was plot driven (no, really!), making the brilliant Kathryn Hahn and Aubrey Plaza successful was fan service. It was also historic, as this was Marvel’s first kiss between super-powered characters.
The MCU’s Biggest Kiss
Since the two first appeared on screen together, Hahn and Plaza’s chemistry was undeniable. However, the fact that each plays a sexy manipulator always leaves us unsure if that chemistry can lead to any physical love. But finally, we see Marvel’s first gay kiss between superheroes when Agatha willingly kisses Rio; the other woman is Death, and their make-out session allows Agatha to give herself up and save Billy’s life.
If you haven’t tuned in to the last two magical episodes, you may need a primer on what led to Marvel’s historic kiss. In short, Rio has been secretly targeting Billy all along, seeing him as a freak of nature for taking on a second life and planning to do the same to his brother, Tommy. She wants to restore the balance, and because Billy needs to surrender to her willingly, Agatha makes a deal: she will bring Billy if Rio stops hunting him.
Rio agrees, and just when it looks like Agatha will save Billy’s life, she goes back to frame A and prepare to sacrifice him. However, when the young man asks Agatha how her son died, she decides to surprise everyone by saving his life. She does this by suffocating Rio, willingly surrendering to Death and making Marvel history with the first kiss between two super-powered female characters.
Not an Amazing Gay First Kiss
Many have been calling this the first kiss of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but to be honest, that’s not true. In Jessica JonesJeri Hogarth and former assistant Pam ended up locking lips. Thanks to Agatha and Rio who did it, there are now two kisses between the female characters. That’s pretty much the same as the previous two kisses between the male characters: one in between Forever (between Phastos and her husband) and Agatha Everything Goes (between Billy and high school boyfriend Eddie).
LGBTQ+ Representation In The MCU
Now that Marvel has broken the mark with kissing super-powered women, we can’t help but wonder if we might see more heterosexual romance on screen. For example, the last movie of Doctor Strange didn’t talk about his sexuality, but future appearances may allow America Chavez to be openly gay like his comic counterpart. And if Kevin Feige and crew are cool with bisexuality on screen, we could see potential MCU heroes and villains (including X-Men characters Mystique and Psylocke) explore their sexuality on screen.
While Agatha and Rio’s naughty moment may not be Marvel’s first lesbian kiss, it’s still the first between super-powered female characters. And whether you enjoyed it for emotional reasons or plot, this was one of the hottest moments in the MCU. The Witch’s Road was long and winding, but scenes like these made the whole trip totally worth it.
