The FBI released surveillance video of the ballot box fire in the search for the suspect
The FBI has released surveillance video of an unidentified suspect setting fire to a ballot box with a hot iron in Portland, one of many incidents in Oregon and Washington state ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
Investigators described the suspect as a white male between 30 and 40, with balding hair and short hair. He is believed to have some knowledge of metal work and welding.
Surveillance footage shows a person driving an early 2003 to 2004 Volvo S-60 sedan, described as black, with black wheels and a light-colored interior. Officials said the car did not have a Volvo logo on the front.
During the Oct. 28 incident, the vehicle also displayed a Washington temporary license plate number on the back and no front license plate. A license plate unrelated to Volvo may no longer be on the vehicle, officials said.

The first ballot box fire occurred on Oct. 8 between 3:30 a.m. and 4 a.m. in Vancouver, Washington, the FBI said. No votes were spoiled in that incident.

Two other incidents occurred on Oct. 28 between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. in Vancouver and Portland. Hundreds of ballots were destroyed at a ballot box in Vancouver, and officials say three were damaged in Portland.

Ballot boxes are equipped with fire suppression systems, but the system inside the ballot box in Vancouver failed, causing many ballots to be destroyed.
The FBI is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the suspect who committed these crimes. (FBI)
All three of these cases involve advanced heating devices placed outside the boxes. Investigators found enough material in the equipment to connect all three fires.
Clark County Auditor Greg Kimsey called the incident “a direct attack on democracy” just days before Election Day.
