In Star Wars, Darth Vader is often considered one of the most dangerous threats in the galaxy… in addition to his mysterious powers that allow him to kill anyone who opposes him, the Sith Lord has a well-earned reputation as a fierce and powerful warrior. he helped wipe out the Jedi. HK-47 Is The Key To All This
The story of Darth Vader accidentally saving the galaxy requires us to go back in time…specifically, to the beloved RPG of 2003. Knights of the Old Republic. That game introduced HK-47, a fan-favorite droid who loves nothing more than killing humans and alien opponents (to this death-loving droid, all biological entities are merely “bags of meat”). Later, HK-47 was returned to the area Trials of Obi-Wan an expansion that added the planet Mustafar and over 50 quests to the classic MMORPG Star Wars Galaxies.
What does this have to do with Darth Vader saving the galaxy, though? Before he got to Mustafar for his big fight with former mentor Obi-Wan Kenobi, Star Wars Galaxies he argues that Separatist scientists find the remains of HK-47 and are both horrified and impressed by the droid’s ability to kill everything (both droid and organic) that stands in its way when it regenerates. To disable the droid’s mind (they were unable to successfully erase his memory), the scientists stole his chassis and developed the HK-77 droid which was far more advanced than anything the Jedi of the prequels had ever faced.
Those same scientists were preparing to mass produce these highly advanced droids, and that could be enough to turn the tide in the Clone Wars, allowing the Separatists to defeat the Old Republic once and for all. However, the fate of those Separatists was sealed when Palpatine told young Anakin Skywalker that the leaders of the Confederacy of Independent Systems were hiding in Mustafar. Now baptized Darth Vader, the angry warrior killed these leaders before fighting Obi-Wan Kenobi, effectively shutting down the production of HK-77 and effectively saving the galaxy.
Galaxy Gone
Sadly, Star Wars Galaxies it was closed many years ago, and since Disney acquired the franchise, all of these old legends have been removed from the catalog and relegated to the status of Legends. That means that this story of Darth Vader accidentally saving everyone’s galaxy far, far away is no longer an “official” part of the Star Wars narrative, nor is it the story of HK-47’s corpse being found on Mustafar.
However, the droid itself may have reverted to official canon…at least, in some respects. In Chuck Wendig’s book After: Empire’s Endthe droid character Mister Bones flips out at one point and says “COMMENTS: I SAY WE GET MEATBAG AND SAVE US THE TROUBLE, MANAGER.” This is an echo of how HK-47 spoke in the Knights of the Old Republic games, though it’s up to fan interpretation whether this is just an Easter egg or confirmation that the assassin droid system is officially alive thousands of years later.
For Star Wars fans sick of the Disney era and the misadventures of the Sequel Trilogy, the story of Darth Vader accidentally saving the galaxy is a fun throwback to the days of the Expanded Universe. Meanwhile, talented writers are finding increasingly new ways to bring our favorite characters and stories together. These days, however, we have to be willing to be impressed when Disney brings one series (hello there, The Skeleton Crew) that makes this meat bag endlessly sad years the lost creative energy of the most popular sci-fi franchise.
