Dem lawmaker calls critics heaping on her comments about transgender women in sports: ‘Trying to cancel me’

Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass., told MSNBC that Democrats were “soft talking” to the American people amid the backlash he received for speaking out against transgender athletes in women’s sports.

“Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough asked Moulton about Tufts University political science department chair David Art reportedly told Moulton’s office that he “contacted his colleagues and he doesn’t want our office to contact Tufts about internships and they won’t help with training opportunities to study with us.”

“Imagine if one of these Tufts students really wanted to run for Republican office? I mean, what would these political science professors do? That’s everything wrong with this cancellation culture,” Moulton said.

Moulton cited concerns about the left’s support for transgender women participating in women’s sports as a way to explain the Democratic Party’s electoral loss.

“But this really hurts Tufts students. Tufts students just want to have a debate, they want to have different opinions. So if people like this in our group try to discredit me or anybody else, and they’re discrediting the opinions of the majority of the American people and how are we going to win the election? in the world if that’s our way, we just want to preach down to people and tell them they have morals if they don’t meet the strict test of purity of ideas,” Moulton continued.

Scarborough admitted, “you can’t even talk about it.”

Moulton added, “The founders had this crazy idea called freedom of speech and we Democrats would do well to remember that fundamental value of America because if we can’t talk about these tough issues, we’re never going to win. And guess what, you know who’s going to be hurt the most by its children, its minority throughout of America, which is going to be attacked by this hateful Trump agenda, and if we don’t have a reasonable response, then the Republicans are going to take the day.”

Moulton suggested that it was a problem for Vice President Kamala Harris in this election and said that he did not have an “answer” to this issue.

In an interview with the New York Times, Moulton he expressed his feelings in the story, citing his position as a father to two daughters.

“Democrats spend more time trying not to offend anyone than being brutally honest about the challenges that many Americans face,” he said. “I have two little girls. I don’t want her to be run over by a male athlete or former male athlete, but as a Democrat I should be afraid to say that.”

He doubled down on his comments in a statement on Friday.

“I stand firm in my belief that there is a need for women’s sports to be competitive and put restrictions on the participation of those who have the unfair advantages associated with male birth,” he said in a statement. “I am also a strong supporter of civil rights for all Americans, including transgender rights.”
