Golf, Mark Hubbard says, is pretty stupid.
You are a worthy source. This week, Hubbard is playing in the PGA Tour’s American Express Championship, and entering Sunday’s final round, he was tied for fifth. This week, however, Hubbard’s competition is in front of a large gallery of family members, and loved ones have been driven from their homes by the California wildfires.
It puts things in his way, he said.
“Yeah, it was pretty weird,” Hubbard said. “Actually now I’m moving to a new house and that should be exciting, and with everything that’s going on, it feels strange and almost bad to be happy about that, because there’s just been a lot of loss and grief for everyone and people close to me. It’s been hard, but like anything else, you put things in the right way and it makes it easy to see that this is a dumb game and none of this matters.”
On Friday, a reporter asked him if it was difficult to focus on golf, or if golf was a good escape.
“Yeah, I think it’s a good escape to be out there and not think about other things,” Hubbard said. “It feels like a little oasis out there right now. And, I mean, selfishly, it’s been bad for them, but I’m starting to see their tone more than I used to, so it’s been good to see them and try to be there for them.”
