Competition, Charley Hoffman says, is fun.
It’s the same for him.
“I like to walk on the highways,” he said, “and boys, how old are you? I am 48 years old. And they give you looks, like, what, you’re 48 years old here still playing? And I think to myself, in this day and age where we’re going to 100 players now, guys playing 48 on the PGA Tour is a thing of the past, I don’t think you’ll see that long on the PGA Tour.
“But I will try to fight here as long as possible.”
This week, Hoffman did just that, and he seems to love that amazing look. Through three rounds on the PGA Tour’s American Express Championship, he is tied for second and fourth behind the lead. On Sunday at the Pete Dye Stadium Course, he will play in the final round.
But let’s go back to the questions of those players. Shouldn’t Hoffman slow down? There have been some really old winners but Father Time has not been defeated. What is Hoffman’s secret?

He says he is in good health. Which has made him confident.
“Three years ago, I wasn’t very healthy, and I wasn’t a great golfer,” Hoffman said. “If I–I feel good at this moment. Like I said, tomorrow morning I could wake up and feel completely different. When I’m fit, the weather is warm, I feel like I can beat anyone in the world. If it’s cold and my back doesn’t feel, I don’t think I can beat anyone in the world.
“So right now, I’m in a good place. I still enjoy training, even now – I love the competition more than I love the practice. I don’t like being away from children, but I am lucky that my wife and children are here. They actually compete in Thermal, they compete against each other, they do things like equestrian hunter/jumper. So they eat money and I try to make money.”
With that said, here is a complete list of tee times. Sunday’s telecast begins at 4 pm ET on the Golf Channel.
