Arnold Palmer would probably sympathize. Bob Murphy, too. And JT Poston. And Kevin Streelman. And Martin Laird. And others that seem to be countless. Even Tip O’Neil, former speaker of the House. They all stood where William Mouw stood on Friday, and they all fell like Mouw fell. He was not alone. His grief was united.
We’re trying to find the best here.
Because there were many negatives. Thirteen strokes, if you count. Then six more.
“Oh my God,” said a PGA Tour Live radio announcer at one point. “What’s going on?”
In a sentence, the bunker on the left of the 16th hole at the Pete Dye Stadium Course happened. Its wall is 18 feet high. Blocks more shots than Shaq or Dikembe. You want to avoid it. But after two shots on Friday, Mouw found himself in front of it, about 25 yards from the hole, in the second round of the American Express Championship. Then? Wow, boy.
— On the third stroke, Mouw swung his ball over the green.
Said the announcer on PGA Tour Live: “Oh, that was so clean. It’s easy to do.”
– On the fourth shot, from the loose grass, Mouw dropped his ball onto the green – back into the bunker.
The announcer said: “Oh my God. What happened?”
– On the fifth stroke, Mouw’s ball missed the fairway by about five feet – and bounced back. That was his second shot off the bench.
Commentator Johnson Wagner said on Golf Channel: “I mean, you can’t help but laugh at yourself.” Notably, on the network site this week, Wagner played a shot from the stable – and landed one headshot.
– On the sixth stroke, Mouw’s ball missed the exit by about two feet – and bounced back down. That was his third shot.
Said Wagner: “Oh boy.”
Broadcaster Steve Sands said: “Did he do it again? He did so. Oh my goodness.”
– On the seventh shot, Mouw cleared the green – but again his ball went over the green. That was his fourth shot.
Said the announcer on PGA Tour Live: “Oh my god.”
— On the eighth stroke, from the right side of the green and, on the loose grass again, Mouw chipped his ball into the small ledge in front of the green — and his ball rolled off the putt and back into the fairway.
Said the announcer on PGA Tour Live as his ball rolled: “Get ready, get ready, get ready, get ready.”
Another publisher said: “Oh my goodness.”
– On the ninth stroke, from the under par fifth, Mouw played his ball to the right of the wall and back into the fairway. The mistakes seem to have ended.
— They weren’t there. One stroke 10, Mouw, seemingly oblivious to how firm the green was, hit his ball about five feet from the flag – and his ball rolled onto the green.
Said the PGA Tour Live host: “What are you doing? Mouw, what are you doing?”
– Stroke 11 was a pitch back.
Stroke 12 was a putt.
Stroke 13 was the last on the hole.
Maths? Octuple bogey on the par-5. He took five shots at the hell house. He started the hole at 6 under for the tournament, and left it at two over. He finished the round in five overs. He started the day tied with 46 and finished with 106.
But there was more.
On the hole after the 16th, the island green, par-3 17th, Mouw dropped his first shot into the water, before finishing with a triple-bogey six.
Some have hit the drink, though.
