BREAKINGCONTINUATION,
The deal is expected to come into force on Sunday and involves the exchange of prisoners held in Gaza for Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails.
Benjamin Netanyahu’s Cabinet has approved an agreement with Hamas to end fighting in Gaza after more than 460 days of war in which Israeli forces have killed more than 46,788 Palestinians and wounded 110,453.
The agreement, which was approved early Saturday and is expected to enter into force from Sunday, includes the exchange of prisoners held in Gaza for Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli prisons, after which the terms of a permanent end to the war will be. completed.
As a long-standing rift between ministers appears, Israel has delayed key meetings of its security cabinet and the cabinet, which was due to vote on Thursday, blaming Hamas for stalling.
Netanyahu’s office said Hamas backed out of key parts of the deal in order to get approval at the last minute. But senior Hamas official Izzat al-Risheq insisted the group was committed to the ceasefire.
Hamas said in a statement earlier on Friday that the obstacles that arose regarding the terms of the cease-fire agreement in Gaza were resolved early that day.
Netanyahu’s office said Hamas would begin releasing prisoners “from Sunday” as long as the deal is approved by the Israeli cabinet.
A ceasefire agreement was announced by mediators from Qatar, Egypt and the United States on Wednesday. The agreement marks the beginning of a six-month ceasefire, the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from most of Gaza and an increase in humanitarian aid.
