If there’s one thing I love more than horror comedies, it’s those made against Walt Disney’s whims. Steamboat Willie becoming a public domain in 2024. Jumping at the chance to make a slasher based on Mickey Mouse, writer Simon Phillips and director Jaime Bailey announced their intention to produce. Mousetrap, and released the trailer on January 1, 2024, the same day copyright laws will no longer apply to intellectual property as if they had been waiting for this moment all their lives. The result is a tight-lipped teenage film in which the antagonist bears a striking resemblance to Steamboat Willie The iterations of Mickey Mouse, like the latest incarnations of the character are still protected under copyright law.

The Mousetrap

Before The Mousetrap into its sinister action, a large disclaimer slowly scrolls across the screen, informing the audience that “This product is not sponsored, endorsed or affiliated with Disney, The Walt Disney Company or any of its subsidiaries or affiliates and/or third-party licensors. .” The disclaimer goes on for a ridiculous amount of time, informing everyone that they’ve made a few phone calls to confirm that Disney wants nothing to do with the film, “legally or emotionally,” but just before admitting that the disclaimer itself is “typical. space scrolling … should not be confused with Lucasfilm and its subsidiaries or third-party licensors.”

Indeed, all this introduction The Mousetrap it’s a joke in itself, but obviously there was a fear of legal consequences going into the project, so why not stick your mouth out when you’re given the chance?

Mouse Trap’s Framework

The Mousetrap

Events featured in The Mousetrap they are told by looking back at the cell of Rebecca (Mackenzie Mills), who is the sole survivor of the massacre at the entertainment center. Outspoken at first, Rebecca is reluctant to tell detectives Cole (Damir Kovic) and Marsh (Nick Biskupek) what happened before she was locked up because she fears for her life. To prove her innocence, Rebecca has to accompany the detectives all night because at this time she is an important person, as she is the only person who left the entertainment center alive.

It is worth noting, however, that Rebecca’s story is questionable because her recollection of events includes conversations that took place while she was allegedly absent.

The story aside, The Mousetrap he jumps back and forth from being interrogated by Rebecca, to Funhaven, the entertainment center where Alex (Sophie McIntosh) and Jayna (Madeline Kelman) work. When their shifts are about to end, Alex and Jayna are approached by their boss, Tim (Simon Phillips), who asks them to stay a few hours because of a last-minute booking. Disappearing into the back office, Tim pours himself a drink and watches Steamboat Willie on his projector until he is distracted by his collectible Mickey mask, which taunts him with a demonic voice, prompting him to wear it.

Tim Wanders laughs, and it’s the last time he sees … or so everyone has to think.

Start the Blood

The Mousetrap

Alex didn’t know at that time that the event that was coming included his friends that I won’t mention because he knows that they will enter. The Mousetrap that no one makes it alive, so why stick around? Meanwhile, what appears to be Tim, still wearing the Mickey Mask, chains and locks all the doors, making sure that no one will be able to escape from Funhaven.

Now, if you’ve seen even just one cutter, you know exactly where it is The Mousetrap you go to this point. One by one, Mickey the killer, with inexplicable strength, kills everyone in his path while giggling with each stab and cut.

From this point forward, The Mousetrap shamelessly fulfills every classic slasher trope imaginable in style.

This wandering couple went to the jungle gym to make love? Don’t be too clingy. The utterance of the phrase “I’ll be right back,” quickly becomes a death sentence. And of course, of course Everyone’s cell phone is put in a bag so everyone can live in the moment instead of scrolling through the doom. Despite this situation, not being able to scroll through the birthday party pretty much spells everyone’s fate.

Magical And Maniacal

The Mousetrap

The Mousetrap it doesn’t set out to reinvent the slasher genre, but it does celebrate familiar beats we’ve all seen before in a very funny way. Although at first I wished I hadn’t seen Tim hide his face at the beginning of the film, which means he’s the only person who could be the killer, going into this film without a mystery somehow makes it even more exciting.

The Mousetrap it shouldn’t make you think, and there’s no big reveal.

In fact, five minutes into the movie, you know exactly what’s going to happen (by design), which allows you to enjoy the violence without knowing what’s going to happen as a viewer while everyone else doesn’t know at all.

You can stream The Mousetrap free on Tubi at the time of this writing, and I strongly suggest you invite your friends over to witness the spectacle of Mickey Mouse on the rampage.
