President Biden is ending his tenure in the White House on a “sad” note after he “lied to the nation” and took credit for a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas during his farewell address Wednesday evening, a Trump transition official said.

“Joe Biden is coming out sad. Lying to the nation trying to praise the deal with all the parties thanking President Trump for making it happen. Biden had more than a year to secure the release of these hostages and peace. He failed. Trump succeeded,” a Trump transition official told Fox News Digital on Wednesday evening.

War has raged in the Middle East since October 2023, when Israel and Hamas reached a cease-fire agreement on Wednesday that also guaranteed the release of hostages.

Biden delivered his final address to the nation on Wednesday evening, where he took a break to end the controversy in his opening remarks.

“American people, I am speaking to you tonight from the Oval Office. Before I begin, let me address the important issues from earlier today. After eight months of non-stop negotiations, my administration – by my administration – a cease-fire and a ceasefire agreement have been reached by Israel and the Hamas Things I laid out in detail in May of this year,” said Biden.

However, the credit for reaching this agreement has been strengthened by the incoming Trump administration, according to sources who told Fox Digital that the recent meeting between Trump’s ambassador to the Middle East Steve Witkoff and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is reported to have played an important role in this agreement.

Netanyahu also thanked Trump on Wednesday “for his help in advancing the release of the hostages.”

“The Prime Minister has made it clear that he is determined to return all hostages as best he can, and he praised the US President-elect for his statement that the United States will work with Israel to ensure that Gaza will never become a place of terrorism.”

The X account later added: “Prime Minister Netanyahu then spoke to US President Joe Biden and thanked him for his help in advancing the hostage deal.”

When asked who the history books will remember for supporting the ceasefire on Wednesday, Biden disputed the suggestion that Trump and his party lead the effort.

“Who in the history books gets credit for this, Mr. President, you or Trump?” Fox News’ Jacqui Heinrich asked Biden at a White House news conference Wednesday afternoon.

“Is that a joke?” replied the president.
