Texas A&M cancels conference tour excluding White and Asian students after governor’s pushback

Texas A&M University has pulled the brakes on an upcoming conference tour after Gov. Greg Abbott, R., found that only applicants of a certain race could attend.

On Monday, radical activist Christopher Rufo posted a photo of the university hosting the PhD Project’s Annual Conference in Chicago. The application specified that the conference was “designed for historically underrepresented populations considering doctoral studies,” and only Black/African American, Latinx/Hispanic American or Native American/Canadian students were eligible.

“Texas A&M is sponsoring a trip to a DEI conference that bans whites and Asians from attending. The university is lying that this use of taxpayer funds does not violate the state’s DEI ban. @TAMU supports racial segregation and lawlessness,” Rufo said. he wrote.

This position finally caught Abbott’s attention late Monday, which led him to threaten the job security of the president of the university if this issue is not resolved.

“Hell, no. It’s against Texas law and violates the US Constitution. It’s going to be fixed soon or the president will be gone soon,” Abbott warned.

The university eventually released a statement on its X account, reiterating that it does not discriminate on the basis of race in accordance with SB-17, a state law that prohibits diversity, equity and inclusion offices in Texas community colleges.

“Texas A&M does not support any organization, conference, process or activity that discriminates against people on the basis of race, religion, sex, age or any other discrimination. The intent of SB-17 is very clear in that regard. We will continue to respect both the letter and the intent of the law,” it read. this document.

In a statement sent to Fox News Digital, university President Mark A. Welsh III accepted the request in question and acknowledged that the conference itself was “inconsistent” with state law, canceling the trip altogether.

“Although the proper review and approval process to attend such events was followed, I do not believe that we fully considered the spirit of our country’s law in making the initial decision to participate,” the statement read. “This conference’s restrictions on the acceptable race of the audience are inconsistent with the intent of SB-17, and, as such, we will not be sending anyone to participate in this conference.”

Welsh continued, “Texas A&M faculty and staff attend hundreds, if not thousands, of conferences and other events during each academic year. We need to make sure that attendance at those events is consistent with the very clear guidance we have been given by our governing bodies.”

The Annual PhD Project Conference has been established by the Pathways to Research and Doctoral Careers (PREDOC) consortium and will be held in March. The PREDOC website described the application process as “exclusive” and “designed for historically underrepresented individuals considering doctoral business studies.”
