Liverpool were held at Forest while Man City stumbled as they conceded a two-goal lead | Football news

The leaders of the Premier League, Liverpool, came back to draw at Nottingham Forest but Man City let Brentford slide.

Nottingham Forest proved their Premier League title credentials by holding Liverpool to a 1-1 draw, backing up their win over the leaders earlier in the season.

It took Diogo Jota’s 66th-minute header from a corner to earn Liverpool a point that maintained their six-point cushion over Forest, who moved into second place in their bid to qualify for the Champions League – and possibly beyond.

Forest remain the only team to have beaten Liverpool in the league this season – at Anfield in September – and they would have recorded an unlikely double at home and away to Arne Slot’s side after top scorer Chris Wood scored in the eighth minute.

Liverpool piled on the pressure later but again failed to beat Forest, who started the season probably on the road to collapse instead of fighting for the title.

Many woes to Premier League champions Man City

Manchester City proved their last-gasp failure by squandering a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at Brentford.

City went ahead in the 82nd minute and then again two minutes later when Phil Foden scored for the two-time struggling champions, who are fighting to qualify for the Champions League this season.

Prior to winning their two league games against Leicester and West Ham, City had won just one of nine to exit the Champions League qualifiers. In that wretched moment, City conceded two late goals to lose to Manchester United while also throwing away a three-goal lead going into a 3-3 draw with Feyenoord in the Champions League.

Yoane Wissa and Christian Norgaard scored for Brentford, leaving City in sixth place.

Chelsea are fighting to play at home against Bournemouth

Chelsea won 2-2 at home to Bournemouth thanks to Reece James’ free kick in the fifth minute of stoppage time but saw their league winless run reach five games.

Cole Palmer put Chelsea ahead with a cheeky finish in the 13th minute for his 14th goal of the season, only for Bournemouth to respond as Antoine Semenyo won a penalty – scored by Justin Kluivert – and made it 68.

Chelsea remain in fourth place – at least until fifth-placed Newcastle play on Wednesday. Graham Potter got his first win as West Ham manager as his new side beat Fulham 3-2.

Carlos Soler and Tomas Soucek scored in the first half before Lucas Paqueta grabbed a crucial third for West Ham, who brought in Potter last week to replace the sacked Julen Lopetegui.

Potter’s first game in charge was a defeat at Aston Villa in the FA Cup on Friday. Alex Iwobi scored for Fulham to make it 2-1 and then 3-2. West Ham moved 10 points clear of the relegation zone with the win.
