Brooke Shields says Tom Cruise apologized for postpartum depression, attacked her ‘because he can’t’
Nearly 20 years after receiving criticism from Tom Cruise for his “insensitive” approach to treating postpartum depression, Brooke Shields is opening up about the “final” apology she received from the Golden Globe-winning actor.
In her new memoir, “Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Age: Thoughts on Aging as a Woman,” the Golden Globe nominee detailed Cruise’s apology after an explosive interview with former “Today” show host Matt Lauer in 2005, saying “Top. The gun actress attacked her “because she can’t. “
In her interview, Cruise said Shields’ post-partum depression book “didn’t cure anything.”

“There’s no such thing as a chemical imbalance. What I’m saying about Brooke is there’s a lot of misinformation,” Cruise told Lauer at the time. “He doesn’t understand the history of mental illness.”
In response, Shields wrote an op-ed for the New York Times, calling Cruise’s comments “an insult to mothers everywhere.”
“I couldn’t stand the noise [daughter] Rowan cried, and I dreaded the times my husband would bring her to me,” Shields wrote at the time. “I wanted her to disappear. I wanted to disappear. When I was at my lowest, I thought about swallowing a bottle of pills or jumping out of my window.”

“I couldn’t believe it when my doctor told me I had post-partum depression and gave me a prescription for the antidepressant Paxil. I wasn’t happy with the drugs. In fact, I stopped early and had a relapse that nearly drove my car into a wall with Rowan in the seat. background But drugs, and weekly therapy sessions, saved me – and my family.

Shields said Cruise’s comments showed a clear “misunderstanding” about postpartum depression.
“Comments like these made by Tom Cruise demean mothers everywhere,” she added. “To suggest that I was wrong to take drugs to deal with my depression, and that instead I should have been taking vitamins and exercising shows a complete lack of understanding about postpartum depression and childbirth in general. If any good can come of Mr. Cruise’s hilarious rant, let’s hope it brings much-needed attention to the disease.” serious.”

In her letter, Shields admitted that, if the words had been said before she became a mother, she “would have kept quiet.”
“I couldn’t pay attention to his funny comments,” he wrote, in Entertainment Weekly. “I could have been content to sit back while this very famous man hijacked my information to further his (deluded) agenda. I was convinced that his behavior would speak for itself.”

But Shields insisted on fighting for herself and “the women who were suffering from the ridiculous and dangerous comments from an illiterate actor who was talking out of the blue.”
“Finally, Tom Cruise apologized to me,” he wrote. “Not publicly, which would have been the right thing to do, but he came to my house and said he was sorry, and that he heard from Matt Lauer’s corner and that he basically attacked me because he could. It wasn’t the world. He apologized a lot, but that’s what he could do, and I accepted it.”
A representative for Cruise did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
