I Jimmy Kimmel Live! The host, 57, returned to his ABC slot late on Monday, January 13, and opened the show with an emotional monologue about the fires, which started earlier this month and continue to burn, destroying homes and displacing thousands of people.
“It’s been a very scary, very stressful, very strange week here in LA, where we work, where we live, where our children go to school,” Kimmel said. “We are back in the studio, we were supposed to leave.”
“That’s our building over there, the El Capitan,” he said, showing pictures of the fire near the studio where the show is being filmed. “How close was this fire to our theater here. Many of us had to leave our homes immediately. Some of our colleagues lost their homes. It was very bad.”

Kimmel continued, “Everyone who lives in this city knows someone – most of us, many people – families, friends, colleagues, neighbors, whose houses have burned down. And the truth is that we don’t know if it’s over.”
Although the fires continue to destroy LA, the comedian said he was happy to see so many people come together during the crisis.
“I think I speak for all of us when I say that it was a painful, shocking, and terrible thing. But it has also been a good thing in many ways because we are once again seeing men and women come together to support each other,” he said. “People who lost their homes were volunteering in parking lots, helping others who lost theirs.”
Kimmel noted that his Jimmy Kimmel Live! watchman, Guillermo Rodriguez“I almost had to come and live with me” because he was in danger of being evicted from his home.

“We lived with 19 people and four dogs. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever experienced,” Kimmel said. “It’s strange that you look around your house and decide what you want to take, then you fight with your children about what they want to take. We had to leave a lot of stuffed animals behind.”
