PARIS (AP) – Two trams collided in Strasbourg in eastern France on Saturday, causing dozens of injuries, although none were serious, authorities said. The accident happened in the afternoon in the tunnel to the station near the central train station.

Another 100 people, although not injured, were evaluated for shock or stress, said René Cellier, director of the Bas-Rhin Fire and Rescue Service. Emergency services deployed 130 fire engines, 50 rescue vehicles and established a wide safety zone.

“About fifty people are in emergency, with injuries such as head injuries, clavicle fractures and knee sprains. But no one is seriously injured. It could have been worse,” said Cellier.

The cause of the collision was not yet clear, but local media reported that one of the trams was reversing at the time.

Mayor Jeanne Barseghian, who visited the site, described the incident as a “brutal collision” and expressed her gratitude to the emergency services. “I am at the station with the injured and the rescuers. Thank you for your cooperation,” said X. He urged the public not to interfere with the rescue operations.

Photos shared on social media showed two heavily damaged tram cars, one of which had come out of the tunnel.

Strasbourg, the first major French city to restore tram services in 1994, had never experienced a serious tram accident until now, according to French media. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine what caused the collision.

Cleaning operations continued on Saturday evening, and residents were advised to avoid the area near the train station.
