The New Year serves as a symbolic part of the offseason. It’s been just two months since the Dodgers knocked off the Yankees to win the World Series. We’re just over six weeks away from pitchers and catchers reporting to Spring Training.
26 of MLBTR’s Top 50 are off the board. That includes six of the top ten, as well Roki Sasaki (who was not ranked because his earning power is limited). More than half the money has been spent – Alex Bregman he is the only unsigned player to feature in our top six – but the off-season continues at a normal pace. It went faster than last winter, when 22 players from our Top 50 had signed when the calendar turned to January.
Using MLBTR’s Contract Tracker, we’ll look at everything a team does on the open market. We’ll go back to November 4, the day when free agents are allowed to begin discussing contract terms with all teams. That does not include two agreements signed during a five-day special negotiating window for teams to negotiate contracts. theirs free agents: Reds deal $2.25MM Brent Suter and the Royals last Michael Wacha on a three-year, $51MM contract.
This is not a complete look at the team’s offseason activity. Blue Jays (Andrés Giménez), Angels (Jorge Soler), Cubs (Kyle Tucker) and the Yankees (Cody Bellinger) are among the teams that acquired the highest paid players in trades. The Dodgers signed Tommy Edman in an extension that secured $64.5MM in new capital. This is a complete look at free agent activity.
