Senate Democrats have launched a “calculated effort” to undermine public opinion on the Supreme Court, CBS News reporter Jan Crawford argued Sunday.

After CBS anchor Major Garrett pointed out the court’s low approval ratings on Sunday’s “Face the Nation,” Crawford suggested the problems begin before 2024.

“It really started after the Dobbs decision, the court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade,” Crawford said. “The outrage was so extreme that you saw, I think, a well-made attempt to undermine the legitimacy of the Supreme Court by the Democrats, the Senate Democrats. . . So that has an impact on public opinion.”

He continued, “The public is beginning to believe that this court is corrupt, that this is still going on. There is no truth in it. This is still a court – you may not agree with their decisions – it is a strong court. It is not a court. A corrupt court. These are nine judges who have very different views on how to interpret the Constitution, they are a kind of it. the main struggle is legal, not political.”

Crawford spoke about a high-profile presidential immunity case from earlier this summer, when, in a 6-3 decision, the court ruled that former presidents like President-elect Donald Trump are immune from prosecution for illegal activities.

He criticized Democratic opponents who “misrepresented” the case while the ruling shielded President Biden from prosecution.

“If we look at public polls, sure, the court has hit hard, but that’s true over the years. The court is often involved. So are other institutions. In the opinion of the court, public opinion is still much higher than ours. And other institutions, including the White House, Congress, and, until now, with the media,” Crawford said.

A Fox News poll found the Supreme Court’s approval rating dropped to a record low in 2024 to 38% with a disapproval rating of 60%. The vote was held days after the court’s decision on the immunity of the president.
