Prince William Reflects on Kate Middleton’s Cancer Battle

LONDON – Britain’s Prince William has described the past year as “brutal” following the diagnosis of cancer in his wife and father. “Honestly, it was scary,” she said.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday as he wrapped up a four-day trip to South Africa, the Prince of Wales described 2024 as perhaps “the most difficult year of my life.”

He also added: “So, trying to deal with everything else and keep everything on track was really difficult.

“But I am proud of my wife, I am proud of my father for handling the things he has done. But from the perspective of one’s family, it has been, yes, brutal. “

King Charles III was diagnosed with an undisclosed cancer in February, forcing the king to withdraw from the public eye for two months as he focused on his treatment and recovery. Kate, the princess of Wales, announced that she has cancer a few weeks later and is slowly returning to public life after completing chemotherapy.

In a video released in September, Kate described her illness as “very difficult for us as a family.” William’s comments in South Africa were the first time he shared his feelings in detail.

Buckingham Palace announced on Friday that Kate and the King will both take part in a national Remembrance Day commemoration, in central London, on Sunday to honor those who died during the world wars and all the conflicts that followed.

Prince William was in South Africa to announce the winners of his annual Earthshot competition, designed to encourage entrepreneurs and innovators to come up with new ways to combat climate change and other environmental problems. He also attended a meeting sponsored by his United for Wildlife charity, which brought together representatives of law enforcement agencies, conservation organizations and organizations trying to stop the trade in illegal wildlife products.

The job provided a welcome distraction in an otherwise difficult year.

“It’s just a matter of just showing up and you have to keep going,” Williams said. “I enjoy my job, and I enjoy being busy and making sure I have time for my family.”
