The best superhero movie on Disney+ has nothing to do with Marvel

By Chris Snellgrove | Published

Intellectuals like to argue about which superhero movie is the best, getting into nasty arguments about, Avengers: Endgame or Sam Raimi’s original Spider Man they are the best films in the genre. In honor of all you true believers debating which tight-and-flights movies to watch next, the superhero movie has absolutely nothing to do with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The best superhero movie, of course, Sky Highand streaming it on Disney+ right now is the best way to find out how old this movie is.

Sky High Rises

The foundation of Sky High it’s simple: the film focuses on a kind of superhero academy (the titular Sky High), where the talented youth of today train to become the heroes and sidekicks of tomorrow. Our main character is the son of a super power couple who doesn’t seem to have his powers, making it hard for him to fit in or make friends among all these talented tykes. In the end, he discovers a power he didn’t know he had, but that may or may not be enough to stop a powerful old enemy who has found a new way to terrorize the moment.

If you’re a superhero fan or media type, the cast is a real “who’s who” of big names, including Kurt Russell as a Superman-like grandfather and Bruce Campbell as the world’s weirdest gym teacher. Wonder Woman herself, Lynda Carter, plays the principal of Sky High, and Dave Foley plays the teacher-turned-teacher and her partner. Children in the Hall student Kevin McDonald (who plays a ridiculously big-headed science teacher). As for the young stars, the main character is played by Michael Angarano, who plays stars and legends of the superhero genre Danielle Panabaker and Mary-Elizabeth Winstead.

At the box office, Sky High proved to be a slow hit, grossing $86.4 million against a $35 million budget. It’s also been a bit of a hit among critics, as the film currently has a critical rating of 74 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. In general, those critics decided that the film was slow but managed to entertain from start to finish.

Why Sky High Is The Best

Now, time to address the caped elephant in the room: Sky High it didn’t draw the biggest box office in the world, and it didn’t really please the critics. So why am I calling this superhero movie on Disney+, a streaming platform where you can watch the entire MCU at any time? First, this film embodies the pure, mindless fun of the genre. While the MCU was much more light-hearted than the DCEU (and thank God for that!), some of its better movies are often buried under the weight of being too realistic or too heavy.

And for this long box lover, Sky High is that more powerful because it embodies the more positive side of comic books rather than trying to look cool. The MCU has previously done outrageous things like replacing a high-octane Mandarin comic villain with a drug-addicted character and changing Ms. Marvel from a rubber-faced superhero to a superhero who, ideally, will look invisible on screen. Currently, Sky High it has characters riding a school bus to flight school and a heroic father who honestly considers throwing his son into a toxic waste pit to help the young man finally develop strength.

Sky High it’s not a perfect movie, of course, but every scene is better than the sum of its parts. It succeeds as a superhero movie, but it also works as a good comedy and a weird fantasy, offering the kinds of good chemistry and character development that the last MCU films sorely lacked. Also, the veteran actors are more than happy to chew on the scenery which ensures that you will never get bored before the credits roll.

Will you find Sky High make the grade, or are you going to ditch this movie and watch other Marvel movies instead? You’ll never know until you stream it on Disney+. And if director Mike Mitchell has his way and manages to create a sequel to the MCU, then this cinematic universe could get more of what it needs most: laughs and heart.
