A BBC reporter returns to a children’s home destroyed in the Syrian civil war

The Yarmouk refugee camp in Damascus epitomized the suffering of the Syrian people during the civil war, which began in 2011.

It was the de facto capital of Palestinian refugees scattered across the Middle East, home to around 150,000 people. But it was ravaged by war, enduring sieges and fierce battles between rebels and government forces, then controlled by the Islamic State group.

Now, after the fall of the Assad regime, people have started to return home, including BBC Arabic’s Feras Killani, who grew up there with his family, before leaving in 2013.
