Filmmaker James Gunn says the battered-looking version of Superman seen in the trailer for his highly anticipated film “Superman” represents America.
During a recent Q&A session at the trailer’s premiere, the director acknowledged the political implications of the film, saying there was a theme of a wounded and bloody America running through it.
“We’ve got Superman who got beat up in the beginning. That’s our country,” Gunn said at the event.

The trailer debuted Thursday online, teasing a new cinematic universe for the popular DC Comics superhero. Superman is played by actor David Corenswet this time, along with Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane.
In addition to reintroducing audiences to classic Superman characters, the nearly two-minute trailer showed the titular character in dire straits, lying bloodied and injured in the Arctic wilderness.
The opening shots of the trailer feature the superhero using his remaining strength to whistle to his dog, Krypto, to rescue him.
Gunn said the shocking images of the broken hero point to an America that still represents beauty despite what he called its current state of bloodshed and violence.
“I believe in the goodness of people, and I believe that many people in this country, despite their beliefs, their politics, do their best to live and be good people – despite what it may seem like on the other side. ,” he said.
But the difficult nature of Gunn’s Superman represents an America where it has been corrupted by “dark voices,” he said.
“This film is about that. It’s about the basic kindness of people, and how it can be seen as uncool and under siege. [by] some dark voices some high voices.”

Elsewhere during the Q&A, Gunn also brought up the idea that the movie is about the goodness of people overcoming these “dark” influences.
He said, “It’s about the basic kindness of people. It’s a good foundation, and one that seems designed to appeal to all kinds of politics. It’s a moral call to embrace respect and hope.”
Gunn, who refuses to be politically specific, has long been critical of President-elect Donald Trump, calling him in 2017 “a President who can’t carry out an all-out attack on facts and journalism in the style of Hitler and Putin.”

During the Superman event, Gunn also revealed how he wants his reboot to stay away from certain recurring themes of the franchise.
“However, given how often today’s superhero stories are scrutinized as symbols of our polarized age, there is little to worry about,” he said. “After all, previous DC installments have been criticized for flirting with dark politics and ‘dreams of fascist power.’
“We all felt like we were doing something good… not a fantasy of fascistic powers,” he added elsewhere.
