Sam Stevens released the tank on Saturday to try and swear Harris English to win the 2025 farmers insurance open at Torrey Pines.
But in the end, Stevens, 28, came up short when he needed them most.
Stevens arrived on the par-5 18th hole just one shot behind English, who was a few holes behind. With the course showing its teeth, Stevens knew that the third eagle might have won the tournament, with the organization giving him a good shot at the meeting or the obvious win should stumble the English.
Sitting 207 yards away from the flag, Stevens elected to pull the 7 iron instead of the standard 6 iron. With the wind at his back, Stevens chose a high club, believing it was his only chance to land it close to eagle.
Stevens’ shot with a boat to the right side of the green, above the lake that sits in front of the last to put the place in the last place in the South. But he didn’t get everything. The ball landed on a rocky bank and rolled back into the pool.
“So I thought it would honestly be a perfect 7-iron if I hit it right,” Stevens said after finishing 4-under 48 on Saturday. “You didn’t make a bad swing, but you just kind of made a swing that you can’t do there and left to the right, kind of hit that soft subject.”
Stevens saved par and finished the tournament one shot back for the Englishman, who won for the first time on tour since 2021.
While Stevens did not leave La Jolla, Calif., with his first career success, the runner-up finished in the top of the Aon Swing 5 Sen next Pebble Beach event in Pebble Beach.
“Obviously there’s a lot of potential there,” Stevens said of entering the limited field event. “They have a lot of points, and we will not enter the number of points in the signature events, but they use that opportunity, hopefully, and continue to play well. You know, each type of event is an individual, I hope when I enter the event next week I can reset and heat early and stay hot.”
JJ Spaun, Andrew Novak, Justin Low, and Lee Hodges round out the list of players who will enter the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-AM with Aon Swing 5. Hodges made his final birdie on Saturday to found Charley Hoffman for last place.
Those five players will also have a leg up when they try to enter the Genesis pool, which will be held at Torrey Pines on February 13-16. The PGA TOUR moved Genesis from Riverria to Torrey Pines this year because of wild Los Angeles. Five Genesis Denitational spots will be awarded to the five players who have accumulated FedEx Cup points at the Sony Open, American Express, Farmers Insurance Open, and the Phoenix Open.
