Kristi Noem removes the procedural hurdle on the road to Homeland Security certification
The appointment of Gov. Kristi Noem, RS.D., to be the next Homeland Security secretary cleared a key hurdle in the confirmation process Friday night, moving to a final vote later this weekend.
His confirmation vote is expected to take place early Sunday.

If confirmed, Noem would be the fourth of President Donald Trump’s Senate nominees, after Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe and incoming Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Votes expected soon after Noem are those nominated for Treasury Secretary Scott Besent, followed by Transport Secretary Pick Sean Duffy.

The governor of South Dakota is expected to receive bipartisan support for his confirmation of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). His appointment came out of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee (HSGAC) with a vote of 13-2. Only two Democrats voted against him.

“I was the first Governor to send the National Guard to Texas when it was in the midst of an unprecedented border crisis,” Noem told the committee during his confirmation hearing last week.
“If confirmed as Secretary, I will ensure that our special, extraordinary border patrol agents have all the tools and resources and support they need to do their jobs effectively.”
