Ukraine says it is striking a Russian oil refinery in a major drone attack

Ukraine reportedly hit a Russian oil refinery headed for Moscow in an attack involving a wave of at least 121 drones, one of the largest operations of its kind during the war.
Video footage verified by the BBC shows a fireball rising over a refinery and pumping station in the Ryazan region, southeast of Moscow, which Ukrainian officials say was the target.
Russia said it shot down 121 drones targeting 13 regions, including Ryazan and Moscow, but reported no damage.
Elsewhere, Ukrainian authorities said three people were killed and one injured when a Russian jet crashed into a residential building in the Kyiv suburb.
Andriy Kovalenko, the head of Ukraine’s anti-disinformation agency, said in Telegram that an oil refinery in Ryazan, as well as a Kremniy factory in Bryansk, which Kyiv says produces missiles and other weapons, were hit.
Bloggers on Telegram posted pictures and videos of the fires burning in the center of Ryazan, which covers about 6sq km (2.3sq miles). Confirmed images show people fleeing the area in cars and on foot as the fire rises into the sky.
BBC Verify used video footage to locate two fires at the refinery. One video shows a fire near the north entrance, its location matched by road structure, signs and fences.
Two other videos show a large fire on the eastern side of the refinery, about three kilometers (1.6m) from the first. The location is identified by comparing trees, poles, roads and paths.
Russia’s state news agency, RIA, cited a statement from the Kremniy factory in Bryansk, saying that work had been suspended after the 6-plane attack. Pavel Malkov, the governor of the region, said emergency services are responding.
The Kremlin acknowledged the attack but made no mention of damage or casualties.
It says it destroyed 121 Ukrainian drones, including six in the Moscow region, 20 in the Ryazan region, and a number near the Bryansk border.
Sergei Sobyanin, the Mayor of Moscow, said that the air defense intercepted the attack by Ukrainian planes in four areas.
He said air defense units southeast of the capital in Kolomna and Ramenskoye also destroyed drones, without specifying how many. He said there was no damage.
Russian news agencies quoted Rosaviatsiya, the federal aviation organization, as saying that Moscow’s two airports, Vnukovo and Domodedovo, have resumed flights after suspending operations for a long time. Six flights were diverted to other airports.
In the city of Kursk, Mayor Igor Kutsak said the night attack destroyed power lines and cut off electricity in one district.
In Ukraine, officials said its air defenses destroyed 25 of the 58 drones launched overnight by Russia.
The Interior Ministry said debris from one of the planes killed two men and one woman in Hlevakha, Kyiv, and injured another.
