New York City Mayor Eric Adams will attend the inauguration of President-elect Trump on Monday at the request of the incoming administration, a spokeswoman for the mayor said.
According to Fabien Levy, the mayor’s deputy for communications, Trump’s team extended an invitation to the mayor to Washington, DC, to attend the opening ceremonies. “Mayor Adams accepts on behalf of New York City,” Levy announced to X.
“As the mayor has said many times, America has chosen a new national leader and we must work together to build a safe, strong and affordable New York City,” said Levy.
Trump will be sworn into office in the US Capitol Rotunda at noon ET on Monday, becoming the 47th president of the United States. The event was brought indoors for the first time in four decades due to the arctic blast that has affected most of the nation. He started the day with a worship service at St. John’s Episcopal Church, joined by members of his family and Vice President-Elect JD Vance.

Adams’ invitation to attend Trump’s inauguration comes three days after the New York mayor and the New York real estate developer met in Palm Beach, Florida.
The two discussed public safety issues, how to bring back manufacturing jobs and new infrastructure investments the federal government could make in New York City, according to Adams’ spokeswoman.

The Democratic mayor, who is awaiting trial on corruption charges in April, said the two did not discuss their legal issues at the meeting. Trump, as president, would have the power to pardon Adams.
Adams faces charges of accepting lavish travel payments and illegal campaign contributions from foreign nationals to commit acts of corruption.

Trump, who was convicted in a New York court last year of falsifying business records, has previously defended Adams, saying the charges against the mayor may have been filed because he criticized President Biden over the border.
Trump said he would consider a pardon for Adams.

Adams took heat from some Democrats for meeting Trump, but his decision to attend the inauguration suggests the mayor was not swayed by critics on the left.
“As I have always done, I will take every opportunity to stand up for New Yorkers and our city. And, after our conversation, I strongly believe that there is much more that our city and the federal government can do together to make New York City safer, stronger and more affordable thanks to President Trump for his time and his attention and I look forward to working with him for the benefit of all New Yorkers,” Adams said Friday after meeting with Trump.
