Dick Vitale’s broadcast return delayed after domestic accident causes ‘health challenges,’ ‘physical limitations’
Legendary basketball broadcaster Dick Vitale will not return to the court next week to call Duke vs. Wake Forest on ESPN after the accident at his home in Florida.
Vitale announced on Saturday that he was hospitalized after falling in his house. In a statement, Vitale said the incident left him with new health challenges and physical limitations.

“I had an accident at my home in Florida, and that created new health challenges and near physical limitations for me,” Vitale said.
“Now, I’ll have to wait a little longer. I’m not sure when that will be, however I expect to make a full recovery and will provide updates when I have more information. Despite this latest setback, I feel blessed to have the support of my family, friends, and teammates at ESPN.”

Vitale hasn’t called a game in two years amid battles with various health conditions, including cancer on his vocal cords.
Vitale was diagnosed with melanoma in the summer of 2021, then lymphoma months later. He returned in the fall of 2021, but later had to undergo surgery on his vocal cords.

Vitale announced in the summer of 2023 that the cancer had spread to his vocal cords, and later to his lymph nodes, which left him with battles against four types of cancer in a four-year period.
He underwent radiation treatment, chemotherapy and more surgery, over the past two years, before being declared cancer-free earlier this month.
However, after his latest fall, Vitale will have at least one recovery before college basketball fans hear him call another game.
