The race for the DNC seat is narrowing after a top candidate dropped out, giving way to Minnesota’s Ken Martin.
The field of contenders for the next chairman of the Democratic National Committee narrowed after longtime candidate Ken Martin, chairman of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party in Minnesota, dropped out.
Martin, the DNC’s vice chair who has led the Democratic Party’s chairmen’s association, was considered the DNC’s top job.
Martin got a boost after New York state Sen. James Skoufis dropped out of the race and nominated him, Politico reported Thursday morning.
Skoufis told the newspaper in a statement that Martin “will refocus on what is most important to our party: expanding the map and rebuilding our once-great Democratic tent by taking power outside the DC Beltway and kicking the middleman out of touch. Class to the way.”

Democrats faced major ups and downs in the 2024 election as former President Trump recaptured the White House and the GOP flipped the Senate and held on to its weak majority in the House.
Martin told Fox News Digital last month that if he becomes chairman, the first thing he would do is “find a winning strategy.”

“And we have to start writing that plan, making sure that we look below the fear,” he said. “How much money do we have in the party? What are the contracts? What contracts do we need to finish? And, frankly, bringing all our parties together, that’s the biggest thing.”

The other two top contenders in the DNC race are Ben Wikler, who has led the Democratic Party’s battleground team in Wisconsin since 2019, and Martin O’Malley, a two-term Maryland governor and 2016 Democratic presidential candidate who served as Social Security commissioner. Current DNC chair Jaime Harrison is not seeking another four-year term to chair the party’s national committee. The next chairman will be chosen by the nearly 450 voting members of the party’s national committee when they meet on February 1 at National Harbor in Maryland at the DNC’s winter meeting.
