A Native American tribe in South Dakota withdrew its dismissal of Republican Gov. Kristi Noem in a letter Wednesday, endorsing her nomination for Homeland Security secretary, Fox News Digital has learned.
Flandreau Santee Sioux Nation President Tony Reider wrote a letter to Noem on Wednesday informing him that the tribe’s executive committee had voted to “remove the expulsion” it had imposed on Noem in May and congratulated him on his appointment to President-elect Trump’s Cabinet.
The letter comes just days before Noem is scheduled to appear before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee for a hearing.
“I commend you on your nomination by President-elect Donald Trump to the position of Secretary of the US Department of Homeland Security, and I hereby support your nomination. I wish you the best of luck during your Senate confirmation hearing on January 17, 2025, and I believe that your commitment to the safety and security of the United States it will benefit us all,” Reider’s letter said, according to a copy obtained by Fox News Digital.

All nine Native American tribes in South Dakota banned Noem from their reservations last year after outrage over his proposal that tribal leaders benefit from collections and immigration issues and comments about the future of Native children. The Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe was the last tribe to stop him.

“Their children have no hope. They don’t have parents who come and help them. They have a national council or a president who focuses on political programs rather than caring about helping people’s lives look better,” Noem said last year in words that received criticism from the tribes.
Reider addressed the issue in his letter to Noem on Wednesday, explaining that the governor apologized for his past comments and explained his comments.

“One of the principles contained in the expulsion decision was that you apologized for the comments made regarding the members of the tribes and the education of the children of the tribe that seemed to offend others. In many meetings before and after the passing of the decision, you not only explained your position, but apologized if your comments offended the tribes. You also sought advice on how to say these issues. of communication going forward, myself and the nation we love,” Reider wrote.

The letter comes as Noem prepares for his Senate hearing on Friday morning.
Trump announced Noem as his choice to lead DHS shortly after his victory over Kamala Harris, citing the Republican governor’s efforts to secure the southern border, which has been plagued by illegal crossings under the Biden administration.

In the months since his appointment, Noem has received endorsements from at least 8 groups or police unions, including the union that represents thousands of Local Guard agents.
Republican Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry he also called on Senate lawmakers, especially Democrats, to quickly confirm Noem after the terrorist attacks that rocked New Orleans on New Year’s Day.
The International Association of Fire Fighters, the largest union, in the history of the Democratic firefighter, also recently approved Noem, arguing that during the fire in Los Angeles “he understands emergency management and the importance of the government’s response to emergencies both natural and man-made.”
