Arsenal 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur – Premier League match report | Football news
Arsenal moved within four points of Premier League leaders Liverpool after North London’s turnaround against Spurs.
Arsenal revived their Premier League title challenge with a thrilling 2-1 win over Tottenham in the North London derby.
Mikel Arteta’s side were rocked by Son Heung-min’s first chance at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday, but they claimed bragging rights over their rivals thanks to a goal from Dominic Solanke and a strike from Leandro Trossard just before the break.
Arsenal’s first win in four games in all competitions lifted them to within four points of leaders Liverpool, who were held to a 1-1 draw by Nottingham Forest on Tuesday.
Liverpool’s game at the hands of Arsenal still makes them favorites for the title, but the Gunners are at least putting pressure on Arne Slot’s men.
Beaten 2-0 by Newcastle in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final last week and knocked out in the FA Cup third round by 10-man Manchester United on Sunday, Arsenal were looking for a response, and Tottenham once again proved their worthy foes.
Questions have been asked about Arteta’s ability to add more silverware to the 2020 FA Cup, with what remains being the only trophy of his reign that began in 2019.
With Bukayo Saka already out due to hamstring surgery, Gabriel Jesus’ potentially season-ending knee injury has added to Arteta’s woes.
But Arsenal have now won seven and drawn one of their last eight league games against Tottenham.
It was another blow for under-fire Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou, whose side are just eight points above the relegation zone.
Postecoglou must find a solution to the consistency that saw them beat Liverpool 1-0 in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final before needing extra time to see off fifth-placed Tamworth in the FA Cup third round.
Tottenham are winless in their last five league games, losing four of those to drop to 13th place.
Raheem Sterling squandered a good chance to put Arsenal ahead in the opening moments when his hard touch allowed Djed Spence to clear after the winger’s run on goal.
Looking nervous, Tottenham goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky was lucky not to concede a goal against Arsenal on his Premier League debut after taking too long to clear, Kai Havertz unable to use the finishing touch.
Tottenham came back with pressure that produced the first goal in the 25th minute.
When Arsenal managed to clear a corner on the edge of the area, Son fired a shot towards William Saliba as it went past David Raya.
The South Korean’s goal moved him into fourth on the all-time North London derby points charts with eight, behind Harry Kane’s 14 and 10 each for Emmanuel Adebayor and Bobby Smith.
Arteta’s men regained their composure to fight back in controversial fashion before the break. They won a corner in the 40th minute of replays which shows that it should have been a goal because it came from Trossard and he took full advantage.
Declan Rice’s delivery was well beaten by Kinsky, and Gabriel’s header back into the six-yard box went wide of the hapless Solanke. It was the fourth time Arsenal’s specialists have scored against Tottenham since the start of last season.
Postecoglou was furious at the decision to concede a corner, but it was too bad for Australia as Trossard put Arsenal ahead in the 44th minute. Thomas Partey started the move by robbing Yves Bissouma in midfield and bringing out Martin Odegaard.
The Arsenal captain’s pass sent Trossard racing into the penalty area for a fierce low drive which he whistled to save Kinsky in the far corner.
Arsenal stayed on top shortly after, but Havertz’s cross from Odegaard’s cross headed home Kinsky from Partey’s delivery. Kinsky saved from Rice and Odegaard in the closing stages as Arsenal threatened to win at a canter before Pedro Porro hit the Tottenham post in the final.
