The future of trucking is moving forward in Shell’s biggest test rig
The Shell Starship Initiative has been on an exciting journey since its inception in 2018, with the aim of redefining energy efficiency in the commercial trucking sector. Starting with diesel engines, the first two versions of the Starship made a remarkable leap in fuel efficiency, but now with the introduction of the Starship 3.0, we are seeing a dramatic change going forward. This latest iteration features a Cummins X15N natural gas engine, which not only improves performance but also significantly reduces emissions.

Evolution of the Starship initiative
A shell The Starship Initiative started with a clear goal: to set new standards for energy efficiency in commercial trucking. The first two versions of the Starship were powered by diesel engines, achieving remarkable fuel efficiency by industry standards. However, the introduction of the Cummins X15N natural gas engine on the Starship 3.0 represents a significant shift away from diesel, addressing both environmental and efficiency concerns.
The X15N engine, launched in 2024, is designed specifically for heavy-duty applications and overcomes previous limitations related to natural gas as a fuel source. It provides the same power output as diesel engines but does so with improved fuel efficiency and significantly lower carbon emissions. This is especially important as the trucking industry faces increasing pressure to meet strict environmental regulations.

Key features of Starship 3.0
Starship 3.0 is packed with advanced features that set it apart in the world of trucks. From its natural gas-powered powertrain to its sleek aerodynamic design, every element of this car has been meticulously designed to improve efficiency and reduce emissions. Let’s dive into some of the prominent features that make Starship 3.0 a game changer in the industry.
Natural gas power train: Switching to the Cummins X15N engine allows the Starship 3.0 to run on various types of natural gas, including renewable natural gas. This flexibility not only improves its environmental friendliness but also makes it a viable option for aircraft that want to move away from traditional fuels.
Weight loss: The new engine is nearly 500 pounds lighter than its diesel counterpart, increasing the truck’s payload capacity. This weight reduction is accompanied by other lightweight materials used in the truck’s construction, contributing to an efficiency of 183 tons per gallon, compared to the industry average of 72.
Aerodynamic Design: The Starship 3.0 features a sleek design with curved edges and improved aerodynamics that reduce wind resistance. Additional enhancements such as solid rolling tires and integrated aerodynamic panels also contribute to its efficiency.
Advanced lubricants: Shell has developed special lubricants designed for the high temperatures produced by natural gas engines. The truck uses Shell Rotella NG Plus SAE 5W-30 synthetic oil, specially formulated for this purpose, and advanced lubricants that improve overall performance.
Real-world testing: Feedback from experienced truck drivers, such as brothers Brian and Eric Rector, was invaluable in refining the design and performance of the Starship. Their experience working with all three truck periods has provided valuable data that informs further development.

Performance metrics
The performance metrics achieved by Starship 3.0 are impressive. It outperforms its predecessor with 2.542 times more efficient ton per ton miles per gallon, and also achieves a fuel economy rating of 9 mpg (diesel equivalent) while towing an industry-high 80,000 pounds. Additionally, the reduction in emissions associated with using renewable natural gas further improves its environmental credentials, making it a viable option for fleets aiming for sustainability.
