JJ Redick Gets Emotional About Losing Home to Devastating Wildfires

JJ Redick opens up about the emotional time he had with his family after losing his home in the California wildfires.

“Our house is gone,” Redick said. …everything we had that was most important to us for almost 20 years together as a couple and ten years of parenting is in that house. There are certain things you cannot and will not change.”

He then explained to reporters that his family got out safely and then he went to see his destroyed house when it was safe.

“I had to see for myself,” Redick said. “I wasn’t serious. I was not ready for what I saw. It is total destruction and destruction. I had to go another way to the house. I’ve been through most of the town, and it’s gone. I don’t think you can ever prepare for something like that.”

Redick later went on about how he felt the impact of losing everything.

“It’s a terrible feeling to lose your home,” Redick said. “I think about what’s happened in the last 72 hours since I’ve been up there, and having a number of people who had homes in the Palisades and are staying at the hotel, you get a sense of the destruction of the community.

“I went back to the hotel, of course my wife and I are worried. I’m not sure I’ve cried and cried like that in several years. And he said to me, ‘I was very reluctant to move here. I was reluctant for you, I know you entered training. I’ve never loved living anywhere more than Brooklyn.’”

The Lakers head coach said he felt very welcomed by the Pacific Palisades community.

“We moved here, and the Palisades community has treated us very well. That part we are struggling with, is just losing the community. I see that people build society, and we will rebuild. …Obviously we are all interdependent. I can say this, for our family, we are as dedicated as ever in Los Angeles. “We feel like our community is not the only one affected by this,” added Redick. He said if “there is something we can do to help and lead, we will do it.” We’re still figuring that out. It’s still very young.”
