Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and President-elect Trump met Saturday and discussed the “mutual importance” of the US-Canada energy relationship and the hundreds of thousands of American jobs supported by Albertan exports.
“24 hours ago I had the opportunity to meet the President [Trump] at Mar-a-Lago last night and at his golf club this morning,” Smith wrote in a post to X. “We had a friendly and constructive conversation where I emphasized the mutual importance of the US – Canada power relationship, and in particular. , how hundreds of thousands of American jobs are supported by energy exports from Alberta.”
He went on to say that he had similar discussions with “several key allies” of the incoming Trump administration where he was encouraged to hear of their support for a “strong energy and security relationship with Canada.”
“On behalf of the people of Alberta, I will continue to have constructive discussions and engagement with the incoming administration and federal and state elected officials from both parties, and I will do everything I can to advance the interests of Alberta and Canada,” Smith said. “The United States and Canada are proud and independent nations with the most important security alliance in the world and the largest economic relationship in history. We need to preserve our independence while growing this important relationship for the benefit of Canadians and Americans for generations to come.”

Smith posted about the meeting on X, nearly a week after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation amid growing pressure from his Liberal Party and increased criticism of his handling of the economy and threats made by Trump.

The president-elect has been trolling Canada in recent weeks, filling in on the idea of becoming the 51st state and posting a doctored photo of himself standing next to a Canadian flag on a mountaintop.
