DAVID MARCUS: California can learn a lot from Florida when it comes to pirates

Among the many brave acts of kindness we have seen during the infernos of Los Angeles, the dark side of human nature has resurfaced in the form of incidents of asset escalation. Unfortunately, in anti-gun California, homeowners are left with few options to protect themselves.
Police have charged more than 20 people with robbery. One dangerous couple even dressed up as firefighters to help themselves to the valuables of victims whose homes were abandoned.

Apparently, with the winds still blowing deadly fires around Tinseltown, all resources, including the police, are stretched to the limit, giving hardened thieves a rich target for their crimes.
One thing these criminals in Los Angeles can count on is that if they meet a homeowner in the middle of a robbery, there is little chance that person will be pointing a gun at them.

In the free state of Florida, where Second Amendment gun rights are respected, not reviled, would-be burglars, after hurricanes for example, know that burglary can be a death sentence.
They know because Gov. Ron DeSantis told them that after Hurricane Milton damaged thousands of homes last year.
“If you go into someone’s house after the storm has passed, thinking you’re going to be able to commit a crime, you’re going to be in really big trouble.” DeSantis promised, adding, “And frankly, you don’t know what’s behind that door in a Second Amendment situation.”
Hear, hear.
There are really two ways that the unarmed people of Los Angeles are being put at risk by the Golden State’s draconian anti-gun laws. The first is that people cannot protect themselves and their property, but the second, and it may be worse, is that criminals know this very well.
When we think about the reasons why we have the Second Amendment, it is often pointed out that it is for self-defense, and to check the power of the government. But in California, we see a third reason, which is this kind of emergency.

Angelenos don’t need guns to overthrow their government, yet, but they do need them to hold the fort, or the house, so to speak, while the government pours all its resources into disaster management.
In fact, if you look at gun ownership rates by state, it’s rural states like Montana that have the most guns per capita. This is because, while in the city, government protection in the form of the police is always far away, in rural areas, often not.
This is exactly where the residents of Los Angeles find themselves today. City and state governments are frustrated, people need to protect themselves and blind, anti-gun policies are preventing them from doing so.
That’s why we’re seeing reports of some of the wealthy in LA paying for private security to protect their homes, which I guess is great if you’re a millionaire, but if you’re not, it leaves you even more vulnerable.
In fact, in most cases, all that would be needed to stop would-be robbers from rolling the dice on their lives is a few plainly armed neighborhood guards patrolling their neighborhood.
But California’s progressive leadership, which, by the way, also has armed security at taxpayer expense, will not allow the average Joe to protect his family with his gun.

Progressive gun policies like California’s, like many other progressive policies, are designed to make citizens weaker, more vulnerable, and more dependent on the government. That’s on display in LA today.
Hopefully, when this emergency passes, the people of California will realize how important their gun rights are and demand their restoration. At the moment, thousands and thousands are helpless.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nate Hochman has been appointed to crack down on crime. Here is his first chance. If the city does not allow its citizens to protect themselves, then the punishment for robbery should be severe, like years in prison.
But frankly, that is not and will never be an adequate substitute for armed people, which is exactly what the founding fathers understood when they enshrined our God-given right to gun ownership.
