Transgender Congressman ‘hidden’ that GOP is ‘prioritizing’ ban on transgender athletes in girls’ sports
Sarah McBride, the first openly transgender member of Congress, criticized Republicans for focusing on keeping transgender athletes out of girls’ and women’s sports.
Delaware, the state where McBride won election to serve as state representative, has no laws preventing transgender athletes from participating in sports that do not match their gender at birth.
“I’ve had conversations with my colleagues about the many bills that are coming before us and I’ve heard from some of my colleagues, like myself, that it’s unclear that this is a priority in the Republican convention that enters the Republican trifecta, that it’s an issue that they prioritize,” he told The Independent recently.
“And it defies understanding, apart from the fact that it is an obvious part of the politics of misdirection and distraction.”

Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala.re-introduced a measure earlier this week to ban gay men’s participation in women’s and girls’ sports in the Republican-led Senate. With the approval of the leadership, it is expected to receive a low vote.
The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act has been a year-long battle for Alabama Republicans, who first introduced it in 2023.
The rating will last that Title IX governs gender “as recognized based solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genes at birth” and does not fixate on gender identity.
Twenty-eight states have restrictions on trans athletes participating in sports consistent with their gender identity.
Since McBride’s election, there has been a battle on Capitol Hill over whether McBride should be allowed to use women’s restrooms.
Tuberville’s legislation would prevent federal funding from going to athletic programs that allow natural men to participate in women’s and girls’ sports.
President-elect Trump has said he will “ban” transgender male-born athletes from participating in girls’ and women’s sports.
President Biden recently dropped potential protections for transgender athletes.
“President Trump stepped in to save women’s sports and won in a landslide,” Tuberville, a former college football coach, said in a statement to Fox News Digital. “70 percent of Americans agree — men are not members of women’s sports or locker rooms. I’ve said many times that I think Title IX is one of the best things to come out of Washington. But in the last few years, it’s been destroyed.

“While I am pleased that the Biden administration has finally withdrawn this proposed legislation, Congress must ensure that this does not happen again. I welcomed my first grandchild this spring and I will not stop fighting until his competitive rights are protected. I hope all of my colleagues will join me in standing up for our daughters, nieces and grandchildren. for voting for this critical bill.”
